About This Place

Located on South Walker Avenue in the heart of San Pedro, Busy Bee Market is a beloved sandwich shop that has become a cherished local institution. Specializing in classic American deli-style sandwiches, Busy Bee offers an impressive array of both hot and cold options, satisfying every craving from savory pastrami to hearty BBQ chicken. Whether you're in the mood for a traditional Pastrami Sandwich, a flavorful Italian Sausage, or their renowned Belly Buster — a generous sub piled high with combinations like beef brisket, pastrami, and corned beef — this spot delivers bold, satisfying flavors that keep customers coming back for more.

Step inside Busy Bee Market and you’ll immediately notice the vibrant hum of a bustling lunchtime crowd, a testament to its enduring popularity. The atmosphere here is straightforward and no-nonsense — exactly what you want from a classic sandwich joint with deep roots. It’s a place where quality and tradition take center stage, serving up sandwiches on soft bread with fresh, melt-in-your-mouth meats and perfectly balanced condiments. The aroma of freshly roasted pork and smoked brisket wafts through the air, promising a rich and savory experience with every bite.

One cannot talk about Busy Bee without mentioning the legendary pastrami — repeatedly praised by loyal customers for its tender, flavorful, and impeccably seasoned profile. Coupled with their option to dip your sandwich in warm pastrami broth, this elevated approach transforms a simple sandwich into a comforting, mouthwatering delight. Customers like Vanessa Cabezas rave about the “soft and savory” pastrami resting “on a soft pillow of bread,” while nalleli Garcia swears by the substantial portions and decadent dipping process that makes you forget about sides or drinks altogether.

The menu is truly a feast for deli lovers: cold sandwiches range from classics like Tuna, Ham, Mortadella, and Prosciutto to the substantial Belly Buster, which can reach $14.25, loaded with premium cuts. Hot sandwich aficionados are equally well served, with highlights such as the Roast Beef Dip, Meatball with Cheese, and BBQ Chicken Sandwich, all crafted to deliver bold layers of flavor and satisfying textures. Not to be overlooked are the variety of side salads including creamy Macaroni Salad, tangy Cole Slaw, and classic Potato Salad, which provide a perfect balance to the hearty mains.

Real patron experiences add genuine color to the Busy Bee story. Richard Cardenas shares his thrill at discovering the Belly Buster, mixing pastrami and corned beef for a truly decadent bite. Mark Gardner’s nostalgic revisit confirms that decades of family ownership have kept the quality “just as good” as it was 40 years ago, embodying a sense of heritage and community pride. While Nate Wooding notes the bustling atmosphere and cash-only policy may deter some, he acknowledges that for true locals this place is a go-to for satisfying, traditional subs.

Whether you’re a San Pedro local or a visitor seeking an authentic deli experience, Busy Bee Market offers a memorable, flavor-packed stop. Embrace the delight of digging into one of their generously stacked sandwiches and savor the comforting, timeless taste of an American deli classic done exceptionally well.

This place is one of those "institutions" that seems like it's just an institution because other people say you have to go there. In reality it's a decent sub, very traditional. The fact that it's cash only and normally quite busy means that it's just not the kind of place you keep going back to unless you're super local and can pop in.

My sister brought me and my daughter here recently and I am certainly happy she did. The selection of sandwiches available, but hot and cold varieties, was certainly pleasing to see. But when I saw that they had one called the Belly Buster that allowed you to combine two of the available meats, I knew which one I was going for. I settled on using pastrami and corned beef and I am glad I did. The taste of both meats was absolutely exquisite. It's been a long time since I have a good deli sandwich like this. Both meats were flavored deliciously, and the provolone cheese in the sandwich was creamy and delicious. I would highly recommend trying this place out as I'm planning my next trip here this coming week to try another of their selections.

I got a chance to revisit my old high school lunch "go-to" last year (October 2024) but forgot to put up a review. Well, 40 years later, the same family owns it and it was just as good upon my return as it was all those years ago. We not only had a lunch during our visit to Pedro but be we stopped and got a couple more sandwiches for lunch before our flight at the airport on our way home. It's nice to see that some of the the "old places" are respected and remain reliable! Thanks to the Lee family for keeping the memories alive!!

Very busy and great sandwiches worth the wait. Flavorful hot and cold sandwiches. Best pastrami hands down soft and savory laid on a soft pillow of bread! I can see why there’s traffic here and limited parking but hidden gem for sure

These are the best pastrami sandwiches all around . If you got to travel do it. Its so worth it. Expect to spend at least $20 - 30 per person but it's so good. Don't forget to ask for some of that pastrami broth to dip the sandwich. You'll forget you got a drink and chips. All their sandwiches are amazing and are served in large quantities. They are best enjoyed in the car

Best Italian hot/cold sandwich places. Generous portions, reasonable price, freshly delicious made. Been here since 1978 in the same family passed down through a few generations. It's literally a deli in the middle of the neighborhood with nothing but houses surrounding it. Highly recommend calling in to order then pick up. There's always a line and it can be long. The hot pastrami is my favorite. Everyone I know loves their roasted pork. The bread is soft and delicious. If it's your 1st time, try the Belly Buster which allows you to pick any two type of meat to put in your sandwich so you can sample more of their menu. I always stock up and get like 6 sandwiches to eat throughout the week.

This place is a sandwich store with some liquor market items. This place gets super packed and busy once lunchtime rolls around so I highly recommend coming early or brace for a wait. My friends and I got the pastrami and the belly buster (pastrami/meatball). Needless to say, this sandwich is huge and basically almost 2 meals. The pastrami was very good and moist and tender. Not too fatty. The peppers are a nice touch and the sandwich was soft along with the spread. The meatball was apparently the winner out of the two for the belly buster. It's been said the sausages are pretty good too. Parking is free but very hard to find especially on peak meal hours. I'd come back here to try the other items they have. It's roughly about 20$ per sandwich and they don't take credit card here.

This place was recommended by a friend that use to live in the area. Amazing! It’s pretty simple. All orders are to go. We have the pastrami (warm) and turkey (cold) sandwiches. All sandwiches come with a side of banana peppers
